5 Kid-Friendly, Educational Things to Do in Berks County This Summer
Summer is flying by, but you can still make the most of the coming weeks before school starts again! Berks County is full of kid-friendly and educational ways to have fun, rain or shine. Whether they’re sitting down for a storytime or enjoying the sun on a nature walk, your kids will have a blast. Here are five things to do in Berks County this July and August!
Attend public library events
Berks County has 23 public libraries, each with their own events and classes all summer long and beyond. Families can enjoy interactive storytimes, show-and-tells, crafting events, and other educational programs every day of the week. Check out the events and classes page on the Berks Public Libraries website for a complete list. You can even search for specific locations, event types, audiences, and dates.
Visit the Reading Public Museum
The Reading Public Museum is another place where there’s always something to experience. You and your kids can explore the current exhibits, including a unique Robot Zoo, and visit the planetarium, which features a tour of the solar system. When you’re done inside, you can head outdoors to walk through the beautiful arboretum.
Explore Crystal Cave
Historic Crystal Cave has been a popular all-ages attraction in Berks County for decades. There are multiple educational attractions, including the cave with guided tours, the theater showcasing the cave’s history, the museum, and the gemstone panning area. Crystal Cave also has a gift shop, a restaurant, an ice cream parlor, a hiking trail, and even miniature golf, so there are plenty of ways to spend your day!
Take a hike at the Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center
Speaking of hiking, a trek through Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center is a great way to enjoy the sun and nature, get some exercise, and learn all at the same time. There are 10 miles of trails to explore. If you’d like a guided hike, the center often has educational events, such as the Invasive Species Hike. You can find more information on these events on Nolde Forest’s Facebook page.
Register for a summer camp program
It’s not too late to enroll your children in summer camp! There are programs for many different interests, from art to history to sports. South Mountain YMCA Camps are a popular choice among Berks County families, but you can find a complete guide to 2023 summer camps on Berks County Living.
